What is a Lion
If you have never had the opportunity to visit Africa or your local Zoo then you may never have been fortunate enough to see a lion in the flesh. If you ask yourself the question, “what is a Lion” the answers run much deeper than the simple facts. We have all seen movies such as The Lion King and documentaries of the plains of Africa that all show the Lion in some form or other so we are all familiar with a Lion but not what is a Lion. The Lion for many reasons has become a widely known animal and grown respect and referenced amongst people from many different cultures and countries. In this article we will try and explain 'What is a Lion'.
What is a Lion
A Lion is a large cat species mostly found in Africa and some parts of India. These large cats are predators and hunt mainly on buck species, but will kill anything, even Elephants when food is scarce. They are usually found in prides of around 7-10 Lions, although there have been as many as 30 Lions in a pride in some cases. Their weight can reach in excess of 200 KG’s, canines that grow to 10 CM long and paws that are bigger than a male hand make this is a large predator that should be respected and enjoyed from a distance. These admirable physical features are not the only things that make what is a Lion. Unfortunately all these characteristics are to their detriment and not sufficient to save them from all the risk factors they face and their population is rapidly declining
What is a Lion Concluded
The Lion has been reigned as “King of the Jungle” for centuries. Anyone who has seen a large male Lion, with its golden mane soaking up those orange and red shades of African sun and that deep load roar that travels for miles in the bush will very quickly understand why. Only being in the presence of such a majestic beast will make you understand what is a Lion. Unfortunately they are becoming an endangered species due to expanding cities and human conflict over land which is destroying their habitats. There are also many people who find the need to show off these beautiful creatures as trophies in their homes. There is only one place a Lion belongs and that is in the wild, not even the best Zoo will satisfy the wild needs of such a spirited creature. There are many regulations and conservations in place to hopefully keep the true King of the jungle roaming our plains for many years to come.
